Kent will become famous soon enough
Re: Open Jam Fear!

I am going through the sme thing. What i have been working on with the teacher that has infected me with the jazz bug is to keep it simple, "outline" the chords with the chord notes, do simple rhythmical patterns and don't be afraid to use repetition. That said, I am still wearing a diaper at my first gig.

Re: Open Jam Fear!

Dear Jonterman,

One of my mentors, a jazz clarinet player named Claude M., said: "Know the melody. Play it. The more you play it, the more you can work around it, and notes in your head will come out. After all, it is so good that the composer thought it was worth writing it down". No one expects a new jazz player to sound like Miles or Dizzy!. But everyone can appreciate a beautiful melody line with some tasty embellishments.

Re: Open Jam Fear!

Jonterman,

Sounds like great advice here (in general).

I for one am completely terrified by improv. One thing I DO know is that there is probably not a musical way to 'drop your duds' (pull your pants down) even if supported by a score such as "The Stripper".

So, if I may suggest (and I agree with most of the posters) - go with the musical, rather than exposing your butt-ocks.

Re: Open Jam Fear!

All great advice, I really appreciate the support. Definitely working on keeping it musical when playing with Aebersold, trying to keep in mind 'less is more.'

I had the nerve to go last night, I was packed and everything...called for directions "Cancelled!" Whew! (not really) I guess I'll have to work up the nerve all over again next week!

Thanks again for the support everyone!

Re: Open Jam Fear!

Miles could play some extremely musical long notes. Pick up "In a Silent Way" if you don't believe it. He even fracks a few notes on that album, making it all the more real. Not cut and splice auto-tuned Britney Spears-ish trash.
