Earlier this week I was turned on to a play-along site, www.musicminusyou.com . Just recently started by Rick Braun with Richard Elliot, it's a take off on the old "music minus one" series that you all may remember from years ago. For a fee you can download an mp3 of a tune along with a PDF file of the part you want to play, whether it's the horn part, guitar, keyboard, bass or drums. To kick it off they are offering a free tune as part of a contest. Record yourself with the accompaniment you download and send it in and you have an opportunity to win an appearance at one of their concerts this summer.
I've turned a few high school band directors onto it and there are some kids into jazz that are already having fun with it.
If nothing else it could be a lot of fun for some students looking for something a little different. I've downloaded the freebie and have had fun with it myself!
