![]() ![]() ![]() | Playing Lead -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I did this correctly, this link should bring you to a picture of a lead chart for This Could be The Start Of Something Big. http://s626.photobucket.com/albums/t...an_Pic0006.jpg I posted once before that I got talked to by a sax player for messing with what was written. The spot that got me in trouble is in the introduction, the last two notes. I played the the B long and slid up to the D and made it short. This started me looking at the whole chart. Lets take a look at the section starting a bar before 45. As written, no slurs. Can we add some? Sit and play it. It's very clean sounding but a little square. Now take a look at this page http://s626.photobucket.com/albums/t...an_Pic0007.jpg Play at Bar 125. How does that feel? The whole page is pretty much the same. Was this chart arranged this way to really swing and sound clean out front or to teach students in high school or collage how to play?

![]() | Re: Playing Lead As for the B slide to D, I agree with the sax player! I would have played that as written! As a lead trumpeter I would have played 45 as it's written too, scince it's unison soli. My oppinion though..

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Playing Lead I think I would play it as written, the problem is that it IS a square chart. Just straight ahead. Maybe a few turns here and there, but there isn't much to do i this chart.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Playing Lead I'd play it as written also. There are so many markings in the part, it is obvious what the arranger wants. He didn't leave it open to much interpretation, which is fine. If everyone plays what is written, it will sound light, clean and swinging out front.

![]() | Re: Playing Lead If you play it the way it's indicated, with good dynamics too, that chart swings real nice bro. It's cool that you had some ideas as a lead player but certain sylistic things are fairly standard and in this case what the arranger wanted is clearly marked and it really swings nice and pops nice if you do it the way he marked it. It's a great chart, play it the way he marked it.

![]() | Re: Playing Lead Maybe I'm missing something...why exactly would you want to slide there? Are you having trouble tonguing the D? I would say it's clearly marked marcato and would sound pretty hip that way. My 2 cents, -Andrew |
