Playing Lead Trumpet

Yesterday night was my first big, big band concert. I'm in 9th grade and I was playing lead trumpet. I thought I was blowing all the air I could to get my sound out to fill the school auditorium but when I listen to a recording of the concert, you can't even hear me...Do you actually have to play really loud...really really loud? The band was not even that big. 1 bari, 2 tenor, 2 alto, 3 trombones, 3 trumpets, a bass, drums, and piano. Someone please tell how to play lead trumpet correctly. (is a fool for not asking earlier)

The tunes just in case anyone is wondering is Mr. Christlieb I Presume, Moanin' (Blakey), and The Puffy Taco.

I could post recordings but as a whole the band did not sound too good.

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

To take a guess.... I'll wager the recording was done with a couple of mics - probably near the front of the band. In other words... right near the saxophones. Get my point? The mics would have picked up the saxes much heavier than you, no matter "how" much you were blowing your brains out (which I don't suggest, by the way!).

First concert...first time hearing a recording... I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe ask someone in the "audience" who was there to let you know if they heard you! Even then, I wouldn't worry much. With more experience doing these types of things, you'll be better and better. Don't try to kill yourself. Play musically and stylistically. Work with your section mates for balance. Did you have fun?? Hope so!

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

It's not blowing lots of air, it is using intense air and you work towards making your sound project to the back of the room and not spread.

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

im a senior in high school and i play lead trumpet as well. when we do recordings we put all the mics in the front of the band where the sax's are. trust me....if you were blowing your brains out you were deffinately heard because our jazz band consists of 12 trumpets 12 trombones and prolly close to 20 sax's (including alto tenor and bari) and im heard quite easily by the audience. if nobody in the audience heard you then its possible that your valves were in backwards because if thats the case you would have been making almost no sound at all over the rest of the band. and if they were in really wrong you would not have even been able to blow through the horn! what horn were you playing on?

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

But, bigdigit5....wouldn't you agree that on a "recording" (with mics placed as you and I suspect), they would mostly pick up the saxes? "LIVE" in the hall... that's another story. That's why I suggested Blazing ask someone who was at the concert.

Regardless.. I still wouldn't worry too much about this "first" recording. Take Bob's advice...and keep on keepin' on.

Bigdigit5.....

You're kidding right???!!!!!

That is your answer to the question?????????

His valves were in backwards??????????

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!

Blazing Asian....

I would refer to the post by Wilcox as most likely.

Bob Odneal is a well respected lead and high note player, heed his advice also.

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

And remember that "lead" doesn't mean "loud." It's all about intent and intensity, and when playing the sound volume will automatically fill to fit the need.

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

Did you have a 6'2" trombone player in front of you? Were there stage curtains which wasn't pulled back all the way? Did you play directly into your music stand or perhaps the floor? Many things can affect/muffle your sound before it reaches (or not reaches) the audience..

Re: Playing Lead Trumpet

Chuck, I've got to agree with you...one of the oddest answers to the question. It could have been that the mics were either improperly positioned, or maybe one wasn't even near you. Follow Bob and Brad's advice-that's great stuff there. And, BigDigit, what's with the signature? What inspired something like that? I'm just curious why you would even joke of starting a conversation like that...

That kind of jazz ensemble is very large-12,12,and 20? That's crazy...
