Re: Saw Botti last night....

Hear, Hear! What DHBailey says!

I have heard Chris play on many appearances in Vegas...he totally fills the rooms he is booked in, his cruises sell out early, his year is totally booked in advance...."it is the worst of times for horn players" . Not so gentle readers. Music is communication, and if making a living performing on your horn is a life goal, one must d efine, connect, and communicate with ones paticular customer base, who is your audience. You must sing and dance to the crowd that actually feels they are getting value for their money and will indeed pay the piper.... :)

oops I was nt paying attention here must be the dementia....I was writing Chris and thinking of a just recent concert by Rick Braun,
it is Rick that recently performed here on Joe M. trumpet and flugelhorn, sorry

Flathead75 will become famous soon enough
Re: Saw Botti last night....

I don't call it selling out, it's called making a living. Years ago my brother got dragged into Boots Randolph's club in Nashville. He dreaded it, and then on the third set at 1 :00AM Boots thanked the audience for staying and told them that they played the first two sets for the crowd and the third set they played for themselves. They proceeded to play some real swinging straight ahead jazz! Just because they play the show stuff for the Grammy's, and record sales it doesn't mean they can't play their butts off. My rule has always been play what the audience wants and are willing to pay the most to hear. If working for the man that writes the checks, play it the way the man wants it!

Re: Saw Botti last night....

I saw Chris Botti at the Greek Theatre this Summer in Los Angeles and I found him to be incredible. Moved me to tears at times. I can't wait to see him again.

Re: Saw Botti last night....

CB is easy to listen to, plays well, sounds great and entertaining...what more do you need.

LUCKY BRIAN..... and you others who have seen him live.

Imagine Herb Alpert and Chris Botti together....hmm..Cool as.

Cheers (an envious)

Re: Saw Botti last night....

In Syracuse yesterday (Sunday, Oct 25th) Chris Botti, Billy Childs, Billy Kilson, Mark Whitfield, Lucia Micarelli, Sy Smith, a bassist who'd name I didn't catch and can't find.

Wonderful! The cat's a player and an entertainer too. One of the best ever concerts I've attended. Took off his mike and played One For My Baby, in the audience, with Childs on piano. What a sound!

MTROSTER will become famous soon enough
Re: Saw Botti last night....

Never saw him live, only on videos, but it's apparent that he knows how to connect with his audience and that is something many are unable to do. So he's successful, even though his style is not to every taste. If you don't like him, don't go see or listen to him.

Re: Saw Botti last night....

Hi Veery 715. I was at that Syracuse concert yesterday, up in the left balcony. Good stuff. The 11 year old kid he was talking to in the front row is one of my students! I used to think (for a very short time!) that Chris Botti was the Kenny G of the trumpet world. Boy, was I mistaken! I wish that I had the endurance to play a concert like that. I'm glad that I saw him live.

Hey Sterling! No, he's no Kenny G! Your student must be psyched now. I know I was (am)!

We've yet to get together...
