smooth jazz

Are there any trumpetmaster posters that play smooth jazz exclusively? I would like to talk with you if possible. Thanks

Where's the chin whiskers?

Heck, I'd play it, but I need to get paid to do it. As popular as it is on the radio and as rich and successful it has made folks like Rick Braun and Chris Botti, there is no live market for it here in Chicago, strangely enough. Folks who frequent the jazz dives around here aren't interested in listening to musicians covering smooth jazz from other artists. The only way smooth jazz works in Chicago is when Braun or Botti themselves turn up to play it.

I can't speak for other places but that sure SEEMS to be the way it is around here. I could be wrong, though. There may very well be some places and bands where this is going on. Fellow Chicago TM'ers - have I missed somethng?

Interesting thread!

Not in the last fifteen years or so. The Rupert's thing was sort of a smooth jazz scene, and all the guys associated with it (NIU guys mostly) did that sort of thing. Steve Reid is still way into it but doesn't play out much anymore. When I was at the Hyatt downtown we did a fair imitation of "smooth jazz" (which is often closer to what I would call instrumental pop music).Hey, I'd play anything I could get paid for but my heart isn't enough into that kind of thing to really make an effort to do it, put a band together, hustle gigs, etc. I don't mind selling out, I'd be first in line but no one seems to be buying.

Michael McLaughlin

I've never known a musician who regretted being one. Whatever deceptions life may have in store for you, music itself is not going to let you down.
