Split Sections in JB

Well I'm in Jazz Band I just realized that all the sections are in this order: 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 4th player...ans so on. Why is it that 1st trumpet is second and 2nd is first? Does it have to do with anything or is that how it goes in Jazz?????

I didn't want to get that ring around my lips from practicing the trumpet, because I thought the girls wouldn't like me. So I never practiced.- Wynton Marsalis

Re: Split Sections in JB

The 2nd trumpet is closest to the rhythm section because they often are the soloists and being placed closer to the rhythm section helps facilitate listening and communication between the players. The sax section usually has the lead tenor on that side, too, for the same reason.

Lead trumpet, trombone, and alto sax are lined up in the middle so they can hear each other better, and everyone else listens "in" to them.

Bari Sax is usually right in front of bass trombone, since they often play the same part and it makes it easier for them to hear each other.
