| Mezzo Piano User | Styles paper I am in this course at school and I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to write a paper about the different stylings of various jazz musicians (trumpet players only please). The likes of Louis Armstring, Clifford Brown, Maynard Ferguson, Ingrid Jenson, Dizzy Gillespie, Cootie Williams, Miles Davis etc etc etc will be discused. I have to write a paper about these (and possibly more) players and their specific performance styles. Any suggestions? Thanks Eric |

| I would discuss it from the theoretical stand point of how each on differs rhythmically and harmonically. That could mean including a lot of transcriptions though to get a good idea of that persons language. I would limit the paper to ones that pushed the Jazz language from the improvisational stand point. Pick one from each style of Jazz starting with Louis and ending with maybe Woody Shaw. IF that is to big of a topic maybe just compare and contrast bebop with modern jazz. I would shy away from writing an “appreciation paper”, you know the touching feely type, stick to what you can show in transcriptions. Also check out Jazz Styles by Mark Gridley |
