Transcribing solos: Transpose or not?

When transcribing solos by ear (jazz solos in particular), is it normal to transpose to the usual trumpet "middle C=Bb" notation, or to write the notes out at the actual pitch? I'm comfortable starting either way at this point, but I'd like to be consistent from here on out.

I'd say write it to the trumpet pitch, C=Bb, then it would be easier to read if you want to go back and look at it, instead of having to transpose.

You are playing the solos, so write what is comfortable.

For me, I write it down in trumpet because thar is the instrument I am transcribing.
If I lift a piano solo I write it in C then transpose it to Bb for my horn.

Re: Transcribing solos: Transpose or not?

Thanks for the replies!

I forgot to mention that I often use the guitar to transcribe arbitrary lines if it's late or if the neighbors are getting fed up with the sheer volume of noise. But I guess it really does make more sense to write for the trumpet, being that's most likely what I'm going to be playing.

My real-fake real book of trumpet lines will be in C=B flat from here on out. :)

Re: Transcribing solos: Transpose or not?

I generally transcribe trumpet solos in Bb since if your want to share them with (or if they're good enough sell it to) other trumpet players the largest common denominator is Bb. (Unfortunately many trumpeters never learn C transposition which is a shame, as most lead sheets are written in C and of course many classical trumpet parts)
When possible get a lead sheet, or if you're really gifted, transcribe the chord changes of the song in Bb, then write them above the solo notes as then you will be better able to analyze the soloists' note choices and educate yourself in that artists' jazz vocabulary. Later you may wish to apply some of the patterns you like in your own improvisations.

Best Wishes,

Re: Transcribing solos: Transpose or not?

I'd say use the transposition of whatever instrument you play. When I transcribe an alto solo, say, (Parker, etc) I write in trumpet key, Bb, not Eb, because that's where I'm going to play it. With modern technology, Finale and so on, it's easy enough to transpose to whatever key or clef you want. When I give my students transcriptions to study and learn I give them a version in the key for their instrument, Eb for alto and bari, Bb for trumpet and tenor, concert for piano, bass clef for trombone and bass, etc.
