Trumpet basics for a newbie

Im sure you guys here this a lot so I'm sorry, But i've always wanted to try trumpet, I've been listening to jazz for a long time and Its just been one of those things I've been dying to try. So I'd just like to know what kind of trumpet I should be looking to buy specifically for jazz, and roughly how much should i be looking to spend. I planned on just getting some books and videos like The Art of Jazz Trumpet by John McNeil, but does anyone have any recomendations for a newbie?

Welcome to TM. Any trumpet is going to work just fine for you when you're just starting out. Far more important is to get a good teacher to begin you on the right track.

So the difference between B, Bb, C, and High C won't matter when I'm buying my first one if I'm primarily looking to play jazz?

Re: Trumpet basics for a newbie

The main trumpet you will need is a Bb. Many players play their whole career and don't ever move into the "high trumpets" My recommendation would be a student model bach, getzen, olds, or something similar. Hope that helps.

Yamaha makes some nice affordable student models. Just a Bb would be perfect.

Re: Trumpet basics for a newbie

It is fun to recommend things for OTHER peoples money!
The ONLY way to buy a trumpet if you have no idea, is to find a teacher first and have them help.
Even if we could describe EVERYTHING that is important, you still do not know what you are buying if you can't play yourself.
It is the difference between being spoon fed or learning to eat.
If you are serious about wanting to play jazz, don't blow it by buying a poor horn to get started with! Define your budget and get help!

A Conn or King should be fine...I think Clifford Brown played everything on a 'student' horn.
