Nicholas Payton.........Sonic Trance...... most excellent with a retro hommage but with some contemporary ethos thrown into the mix.

Quite excellent and a big turn in direction for him. Check it out!!!

Nicholas Payton's -- "Gumbo Noveau" for me, don't have "Sonic Trance" but will pick it up one of these days.

Re: Nicholas-- He's probably going to show up on an album this year with Terry Gibbs.

My teacher Howie Shear did some arrangements of Bird numbers for Terry Gibbs with strings and the two horn players were Nicholas Payton and James Moody. All this happened in the last three months.

I saw Payton live a while back. He played the theme from the flinstones! Played it absolutely amazing, too. I'm listening to some Woody Shaw stuff right now, some of those modes he goes into are just off my radar. I can't believe the jumps he makes during his solos. Freakin' amazing! My trumpet teacher played with him on a recording, he said he begged not to take any but the first solo.

I was listening to "Maynard's Live at Jimmy's," then I saw my Best of Buddy Rich vinyl (why spend thousands to replace my records with CDs?). Man that West Side Story Medly is kickin'!
