What should I play?

Hi everyone.

I'm pretty new to jazz, but recently, a desire to learn some jazz tunes on my own hit me like a ton of bricks right out of the blue. So can anyone suggest which trumpet player (or band) I should start with? I'm looking for something thats pretty easy, not smooth and slow like Miles Davis, but something more exciting, such as Louis Armstrong.

Thanks =D

I'm not a huge Miles fan either...

My favourite lately... Nat Adderley

So you think Miles is "smooth and slow", eh? I'd point you to his 1955 version of Tune Up, or his 1965 tune Orbits. Or his 1949 recording Live in Paris. Or his 1970 What'd I Say from the Cellar Door sessions, or his 1971 Right Off from Jack Johnson. Then get back to me about how smooth and slow he was. Sorry, you just haven't heard very much.

Michael McLaughlin

Re: What should I play?

Michael: you must admit his later work was mellow...

Re: What should I play?

Yes his later work after his smooth jazz journey was very VERY mellow.

Re: What should I play?

To me, the definitive hard bop groups are Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the Horace Silver quintet, and the Clifford Brown/Max Roach quintet. Get a bunch of recordings by those groups, then get a bunch of recordings by the guys who played on those recordings, and then you'll have a decent collection of classic jazz.
