![]() | 8310z range finding I am very happy with the sound I am getting on my 8310z (and with the excellent build quality) but, having tried a friend's Holton MF, I realise that I am capable of playing much higher than I can on the Yamaha. I also find the MF less tiring. However, I do not particularly like the harsher sound I get on it (the MF). I have been told about MK tuning slides and I have found out that that they make two slides for the 8310z; a half round and a fully round. I feel inclined to go for the full round because this is apparently the one that really makes the difference above the stave. MK-drawing say that the sound I will get (with either slide) will be a more brilliant one. I suspect that there has to be some sort of trade off but I would not want a wholly different sound. I feel tempted to order the fully round slide today particulary now that my wife has okeyed it. But I also need to feel that I have done enough research. Can anyone advise me? | New Friend | Re: 8310z range finding I think you may still need to learn to back off with the 8310z. It is not a horn you can muscle easily, and it will choke up if you aren't effcient with it. That said, my upper range is pretty much the same on my 8310z as any of my other horns. Quote:

![]() | Re: 8310z range finding Hi Rob, I have an mk round slide on my 6310Z (along with a pilczuk) the round slide doesn't necessarily help with range. It kind of darkens the sound a bit, makes it a bit free-er blowing than the std slide, but also seem to add more 'core' to the sound. Playing a shew horn successfully is 100% about breathing. I would maybe check out your breath control & breathing first before springing for the new slide. are you familiar with the 'Science of Breath' book? Cheers! Ewan |

![]() | Re: 8310z range finding I ordered three different slides from M/K for my Shew, and I enjoyed playing them, but they changed the sound enough on the horn for me to be compare it to other horns I have. For instance the braced and slightly more rounded slide makes the blow and sound a lot like my 72 Bach. As for range, it doesn't change it but again, if you overblow the Z it will just not play up high for you. I returned my slides, but I suggest you give them a try... less than buying a 72 Bach or MF Horn! One last: Shew himself is available to tweak your horn if it hasn't been pre-tweaked and it WILL open up the blow up top, and he charges less for this than one M/K slide. Ed |

| Forte User | Re: 8310z range finding Most trumpet will have one range, no matter how tweaked they are - and that would be your range. This won't change unless something is basically wrong with a horn. However resistance, sound, response can be changed by tweaking from knowledgeable person. Changing the tuning slide is just one of the options. Ewan is quite right on what a round slide does.
