look at the Vacchiano series. I believe they are a bit more open than the standard Bach 3C. If not you can always ask them to make the throat bigger for you.

Re: Bach 3c sized mouthiece with a larger throat

After many years and several draws filled with mps in my basement, I've come to the realization that when you start to alter the size of the throat on a mp, the backbore has to eventuallly be altered as well to help balance the mp. I have found that drastic throat size changes usually throw the entire balance off. Going from 27 to 26 is cool....however going from 27 to 22 can sometimes throw you off a bit. Today we're quite fortunate that there are many wonderful mp makers with great knowledge.....I'm happy that we can find them on the internet and contact them easily with FAQ's.

In play a Kanstul CG3. The rim is based on an older cornet mp design which is quite round and considered to be sharp by some, however the inner rim diameter is based on a Bach 3C. The standard throat size on these mps is 23. I'm sure that you're aware that the standard throat size on a Bach 3C is 27. The backbore on the CG3 is larger as well to help compensate for the larger throat. I do about 80% of my work on this mp.

BTW, I have played a Stork/Vacchiano 3C---
The cup is closer to a V shape and it appears that the thoat is a bit larger. I knew Stork from his work when he was the custom mp guy at Giardinelli's in NYC. His work is world class.

I don't know if the throat is bigger or what, but I recently moved from a Bach 3c (which I played for 30 years, but had for some reason, started to feel 'stuffy' to me) to a Curry 3c which feels more open.

For a Mt. Vernon Bach sized 3C, the Schilke 15B is extremely close and
does come with a 26 throat. The Schilke standard backbore is a bit more
open the standard Bach 10 backbore on the 3C as well.
You can also check out Karl Hammond's mouthpieces. His 5 series does
indeed feel like a 3C and comes in various cup shapes, throats, and backbores.
They are terrific mouthpieces and Karl is a pleasure to work with. Karl is
a TM supporter and his website is posted in the banner.

Rich Tomasek

This is nothing new. Several of our brass instrument makers provided superlative mouthpieces to match their finest horns. The names of Bach, Selmer,( Paris ), York, Conn, Reynolds, King, and most of the others that made artist grade horns also made mouthpieces to match their finest horns. In my persaonal case, I use a recently custom gold plated Olds 7C,( quite different from any of the other brand 7C's that I have accumilated ) for my trumpets. For my cornets I use just what the initial poster was looking for in the York 41 1/2. I wish that I could find a maker who provided a new production copy of this fine iece, without having to have one custom made. At my age, such an expense would be most foolish.

Re: Bach 3c sized mouthiece with a larger throat

Hi,

The Yamaha Signature "Rod Franks" model as approximately the same volume as a 3C but with a bigger throat (as stated on the French Trumpet website Tout sur la trompette )
That's the model I use presently.
