Best Cup Mute??

I'm a comback player and haven't used a cup mute for a long time. My old unit disappeared along with a great copper Harmon. So what are the best replacements?? Thanx LK

Re: Best Cup Mute??

JO-ral makes really great mutes....I just bought a jo-ral copper harmon and it is the best mute I have ever used...the cup mute sounds really good but I like to keep a stone lined cup mute also just cause the sound is much diferent and I like to use it sometimes.

Re: Best Cup Mute??

I go with the H & B Stonelined cup.

Playing in the big band we all need to blend together and that one has the authentic sound.

The symphony players may use a different brand.

Re: Best Cup Mute??

I am a big fan of my Dennis Wick Adjustable Cup Mute. In adjusting the distance of the cup from the bell I find that I can alter the sound and volume when needed. I play mostly in orchestra and only get to use it for holiday pops concerts but nonetheless, it is a great mute.

Re: Best Cup Mute??

I find that if you have a Wick and an H&B you are covered for everything.

For big band playiing the H&B can't be beaten, but I would suggest the Wick for most other circumstances.

Re: Best Cup Mute??

I love my Trumcor Classical Cup Mute! I never tried it in a bigband setting but for all other settings is a very nice mute. It seems that it is not very popular on TM. Nevermind! I'm loving it

Re: Best Cup Mute??

The Ray Robinson was the cup mute of choice for many years in New York studios. Alas, the company went out of business. They resembled the H&B Mica-Mute, except the mute is black and white. The mute was in tune and easy playing.

Alex Yates has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Re: Best Cup Mute??

I have a Wick, Joral, Bach plastic and the old H&B red and white one (from junior high school). I almost always go with the H&B for sound, but intonation is a pain. I think the tambre of board or wood is more complimentary to a cup mute sound than metal. I dunno....

I have a Trumcor brass bottom straight mute and like it very much, but have not tried the cup mutes.

Re: Best Cup Mute??

I like the old red and white Humes & Berg. In fact, I just bought a new one for my other horn case.
