You have 94 posts here and should know better by now............. The only best mouthpiece is the one that fits YOUR chops. It is impossible to predict exactly what the Olds Recording will do, but it is pretty "standard" in construction and should work reasonably well with any of the well known brands. Manny usually starts talking about what tie matches his socks here........... |

| Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Sorry but I seem to remember that some of the TM's felt there was a mouthpiece make that was a better fit than most....when taking into account the mouthpiece receiver of what is now a vintage horn. Gap was also another issue...perhaps I didn't make myself perfectly clear! Of course I realise there is no best mouthpiece......by what I have described hopefully more clearly I will get some wise words. I have a Recording coming later this week and of course will try my Monette mouthpieces but if the shank is too small or too big the gap will be an issue. ROWUK......I wasn't asking for the best mouthpiece in the world...it was qualified with "for an Olds Recording" Walter |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording The wet noodle could end up being the best mouthpiece........................... Walter, we always need more to go on. There is so much more to a personal choice like a mouthpiece. As a rule, the mouthpieces sold with mass produced trumpets are not the best ones. Schilke advocated NO gap - and his mouthpieces were hallmarked for excellent intonation with just about any trumpet (I used an 18 for 20 years!). I use a Monette B2D with excellent results in all of my Bb horns (even the pre 1900 historic ones). There are many specialty shops that can custom make and gap and plate and polish and calculate - in the end, you will only find out when you stick it in the trumpet. If it is vintage, the receiver may even be worn, further complicating the choice. If it is vintage, it may not even be 100% original. Do you see where I am coming from. Too many factors to make a blanket recommendation for someone whose chops, body, lungs, ears, musical preference and particular vintage Olds Recording that I am not familiar with. Try whatever you have now, that is cheapest. If it works, congratulations. If it doesn't, maybe it is the horn and not the mouthpiece. In that case you can sink more into mouthpiece trials than the horn cost. A good repair shop can check the obvious, let us know what happens! |

| Pianissimo User | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Walter I bought a Recording last year. There does seem to be a taper difference on the Recording compared to my current trumpet (Stomvi Elite). The Recording came with a 40 year old Bach 3C which fits the Recording but rattles around in the Stomvi. So there is an issue there. Good luck. I'm lucky if I get both socks to match. I have to second this view on the matter. No mouthpiece beyond what you're currently comfortable with is going to make a stallion out of the Olds Recording in itself, regardless of the horn or the mouthpiece. | |

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Manny matches his tie to his suit! As for fitting the mouthpiece, an Olds 3 would seem a good choice. It may not play the best, though. |
