Re: Best Slide Grease

Really depends on the slide to greased.

Flip Oaks has the recipe on his side for Lanolin based greases (one for fixed slides and one for 1 and 3) that I find work pretty dang good. Tends to be Schilke like.

Others just use Vasoline.

I also like Selmer tuning slide grease the res sticky stuff for some things like loose fitting 3 slide dumps (like on a strad without a 3rd valve spit valve).

For the 1st and 3rd slides then it depends on what the horn likes and how fast you want them. Some just use valve oil and others go off into mixes of slide lube like the selmer thinned with valve oil.

Experiment and find what works best for you.

Re: Best Slide Grease

Anhydrous Lanolin from the drugstore, cheap, dependable and easy to remove when cleaning. It is not poisonous and can get the perfect consistency for the first and 3rd valves with a drop of valve oil. The tuning slide and 2nd valve should be applied undiluted.

I do not like vasoline because it is not thick enough for the tuning slide and 2nd valve slide and it is not viscous enough to keep the slided covered. Metal to metal contact means WEAR!

Lanolin here too. Don't know if it's the best, but it's the only thing I've used. When I came back to the horn and bought an old sweet K-Modified, I asked the seller if lanolin is still okay. He was swell. Didn't make me feel stupid for being away for it for so long. Said it's still used and does just fine.

I use Selmer slide grease (the red stuff) and cut it with some valve oil on the slides that need to move fast (1st and 3rd valve slides).

Re: Best Slide Grease

I've always used the same (noname) oil (well, actually it's the local music store's brand oil...)

does it really make a dramatic difference?

Re: Best Slide Grease

For $5.59 per monstrous 10OZ. tin you can have the best that I have ever found, and it works wonders on chapped hands too. It is a formulation of Petrolatum,( Vasoline ), lanolin and .03% medication by volume. It is the same stuff that many horn makers have repackaged and sold for BIG money. Bag Balm. Try it. You will like it and if you don't, use it to soften your hands for your sweety. See, no waste of money, and it just might improve your love life. I see all of this as a big plus.

Another vote for Ultra Pure. I got some with an order
for valve oil and they work great for me.
