![]() | Hey all - I wonder if some kind people out there can give me some advice on buying new mutes? I stopped playing several years ago and returned to it some months back: I'm now gigging again and need to work up a core collection of mutes. My first purchases I thinkn need to be straight and wah-wah..... But....since I stopped playing, a whole host new stuff is out there: so can anyone recommend good choices? I don't have a fortune to spend, but I want to buy something I don't have to upgrade later....in about the $50 range I guess, more if necessary. I'm playing mostly jazz, all solo stuff. Any ideas? The Tom Crown mutes look good.....anything else? Oh, and I DID do a forum search before posting, nothing seemed quite to cover this.....apologies if I missed something. Thanks! Bruce

| Forte User | Re: Buying Advice for a Straight Mute (and Others) Bruce, For Symphonic TC are quite good, though I prefer Trumcor. DW are also quite popular though their intonation is slightly inferior IMO to the above 2. I am not a jazz player, but know that some jazzers are quite enthusiastic about the all copper TC straight mute. Worth a go. If you play in a horn section (Big Band) your choice should be what others use (often H&B) but if you are on your own, play what you like...

![]() | Re: Buying Advice for a Straight Mute (and Others) Thanks for this, it does raise a question that I meant to ask..... Aluminum or copper? Does copper give a heavier or duller sound.....? Is either more commonly used for jazz? thanks!! Bruce

![]() | Re: Buying Advice for a Straight Mute (and Others) look at the $50 to spend thread. There is a link to a mute for under $50 and will not disturb anyone. I'd say its a great mute... If you can't find the thread then let me know. Good luck!

![]() ![]() | Re: Buying Advice for a Straight Mute (and Others) I own and use a Leblanc Vacchiano straight , H&B cup and bucket, Harmon aluminum wow-wow, and plunger from a $1.00 store. Copper does darken the tone, so if your playing in a section with other trumpets' check what their mutes are made of ,the type of metal used makes a bigger difference than the brand. These are the most common mutes used in my area. |
