Can I plug a Yamaha Silent Brass mute into any Preamp?

Hey all -
Sorry for another question, but does anyone know if a Yamaha Silent Brass mute plugs into any preamplifier without the Yamaha module things, or do I have to have the whole system?

Trying to find the most inexpensive way of doing it.....

Checked other postings on the SB, nothing seemed to answer this.....

Thanks!
Bruce

I thought I had read somewhere that it required phantom power. I'll have to try it out on my mixer at home. It have the ability to provide phantom power.

Re: Can I plug a Yamaha Silent Brass mute into any Preamp?

I think it is an eletret condenser microphone that needs a certain voltage (1.5V or so). You would have to build an adapter to provide the voltage, then you could plug it in elsewhere. It is NOT 12V or 48V phantom power. You will destroy the mic if you plug it into that!

I don't consider that to be an intelligent move though. Yamaha built a compressor into their amp to compress the louds, making them softer. That way the characteristics of our hearing are taken into account and we do not destroy our eardrums as easily. If somebody was a real analog electronics crack, they could probably get away cheaper - if the time investment were ignored.

Yamaha is not cheap, but it is not overpriced for what it truly is - regardless of the product.

Re: Can I plug a Yamaha Silent Brass mute into any Preamp?

Hi,
I actually try to build a home-brew version of the silent brass amp.
If anybody is interested in collaboration he is welcome to send me an email.

Could anybody who has a silent brass maybe measure the voltages of the cable that is plugged into the mute? There are 3 wires. Two of them should be something like +/- 5V and the third one should be 0 V.
I don't know which one has which voltage, so it would be great if anyone could help me.
(And please don't change anything - i don't want to damage my mute. ;) )
