Chet Baker Mouthpiece

In this video, it looks like he's using a a huge deep mouthpiece, his tone says that too. ANyone know what size/depth mouthpiece Chet used?

Generally, anything he could beg steal or borrow - much like his horns.

CHET'S HORNS:
  • Martin, Committee model (50s)
  • Selmer flugelhorn (60s)
  • Conn Constellation 38B (70s)
  • Buescher Aristocrat, student's model (early to mid 80s - pawnshop)
  • Getzen Capri (86 - 87)
  • Selmer, model: Vincent Bach Stradivarius (87 - 88)
  • also a large bore Besson Flugel

CHET'S MOUTHPIECES:
  • Bach 6B (in the 50s),
  • Bach 6C (from the early 70s)
  • also Bach 10-3/4

But, then again, it could be as Ben H. stated above. During his last few years, I understand he used an XL bore Bach.

Re: Chet Baker Mouthpiece

Just an aside-- IMO Chet's one of the greatest jazz figures of all time. Actually quite under-rated. From the first note you can tell it's him. Note how he tended to "puff" the notes (maybe has something to do with having his teeth kicked out in a drug deal, maybe not). He makes it look easy but stop worrying about how high you can play for a minute and try to duplicate the way he plays. Most can't come close-- very difficult. Many seem to dismiss Chet because of his totally screwed up personal life and other reasons... for instance frankly I never took him seriously for many years because of reverse racism; because he was white. All that James Dean-ish hype was a turn off. But when it comes right down to it Chet stands out as one of the very top trumpet players of all time in my book. My brother-in-law played with him frequently in the 60s and 70s in Italy-- dedicated an album to him (good luck finding it):

allmusic ((( To Chet > Overview )))

Chet's my absolute favourite player of all time - someone I can never get bored of listening to.
