Re: cornet mouthpeice

It depends on when your Olds was made. I believe that Olds cornet made before 1956-57 had larger mouthpiece receivers which is why any contemporary cornet shank mouthpiece may not fit. I don't think that there is a such issue with Holtons. Let me point out that IMO a 14a4a is not a good fit sound wise for any cornet even if it fits in. That's why everycompany have designed mouthpiece specifically for B flat cornet, soprano cornet and piccolo. FWIW, I have a Schilke piccolo mouthpiece 12AX that fits just fine in my cornet (the mp receiver of my Olds cornet was changed with a modern cornet standard receiver)...

Quote:
14A4x 17.09 .673

Based on the popular 14A4a, this mouthpiece creates a very open blowing feel with the large "x" backbore. This backbore improves the ease of playing and opens up the sound of our piccolo trumpet. Also ideal for Eb soprano cornet.
From what I see from the manual, you will need 14A4x

Re: cornet mouthpeice

I have both a Holton Collegiate and a Super Collegiate cornet. Any standard cornet mouthpiece will fit your Collegiate cornet perfectly.

Re: cornet mouthpeice

I have two Holton cornets, including a Collegiate, and they both take standard cornet mouthpieces. If there is an issue with something not fitting, it is the mouthpiece, not the cornet receiver.

Re: cornet mouthpeice

I am sorry, my concept of cornet sound does not include a 14a4a scream mouthpiece. I consider that piece to be a specialist mouthpiece for those with the chops and brains for being lead trumpeters. Cornets are more intimate, sexy in my opinion. Deep C or Vee cups make them sound like cornets instead of wimpy trumpets.

Re: cornet mouthpeice

im origonaly a cornet player, but left playing cornet for about a year playing lead trumpet on a 14a4, but ive now started brass banding again and got my old cornet MP out, which felt huge, i had no endurence and a poor upper register, both issues as im playing on front row.... so i bought a plastic kelly 3C for my cornet, apparaently its a simmiler size to the schlike 14's and its plastic because it was half the price of a metal one, which i cant really afford anyway, skint student and all..... im thinking about getting the 9C4 thats on ebay right now, but not sure how that compares to my 14A4 or my 14B.... any ideas?
cheers :)

Re: cornet mouthpeice

Definitely 14B, though 14E would be even better for brass banding. IMO C cups are not recommended for brass band playing

Re: cornet mouthpeice

very true! I played on a john rigeon 2M pritty rare as after a quick google, medium deep V shaped cup with a nice flat rim, and I have a DW 2B aswel which is quite similar, ive just been looking on the net for a 14B cornet MP but there very expensive, £50..... Ive never played a 14E.... what about a 9C4, whats the difference between a 9 and a 14? would it work? switching from a 14 to a 9? theres a 9C4 on ebay atm for quite a bit less than 50quid! I knew a guy at my old band who was a lead player with the army and he used a bach 1E for trumpet and cornet but had a trumpet sound, i need a trumpet sound when playing trumpet but a cornet sound while playing cornet.....

Re: cornet mouthpeice

Sorry, what I've wrote is not I thought . I got confused about yamaha numbering system. The 14B is shallower than C cups (when we speak about yamaha mps of course) which can be probably appropriate for a soprano cornet, but I wouldn't consider it for front row. So Yamaha 14D or 14E would be a better choice IMO.
