cornet mouthpeice

I feel that I am a fairly good trumpet player. Ive been playing since I was 12 yearws old and I am 56 now. I have not been playing for all those years in between but I play off and on and do pretty well. I am playing on a OLDS F.E. and SONS studio trumpet with a 14a4a schilke mouthpeice. This is the perfect mouthpeice combination for me and that horn. I am purchasing a Holton Collegiate Cornet and need a mouthpeice for it. I would like to stick to a schilke 14a4a because it works good for me and Im used to the feel and size of the mouthpeice. I have gone to the Schilke website and found that they make a 14a4ax for the cornet but I also read reviews on it that said that the mouthpeice didnt fit into the receiver. Can anybody help me with that?

Re: cornet mouthpeice

The 14a4x is designed for piccolo trumpet. You should be able to get a 14a4a with a cornet shank.

Re: cornet mouthpeice

What did they refer to, as to won't fit? Is it a short shank MP that won't seat in the receiver? All the Collegiates that I know about from 1950 or so have a standard receiver that works with any standard Bach or the like. I used to have an early 50's Collegiate. I don't know much about Schilke's, but I have been checking out specs to find a deep V cup for my cornet playing. I see the one you are interested in, per Schilke MP comparator, doesn't show a direct Bach size equivelant. Can you cite the review's locations?

Re: cornet mouthpeice

I beleive the mouthpeice shank was too large. Bigger than the bore of the receiver that is. I just want to know when Im purchasing the mouthpeice, that it will fit.

Re: cornet mouthpeice

What sound are you looking for from your new cornet? What kind of music will you play with it?

Kanstul will make you just about anything you want, so long as you can give them adequate direction as to what you want as to cup and shank. They can do one-piece or two piece. Kanstul.com

That is very strange. I would think a standard cornet mp, not a Picc. one would fit. Are you somewhere where you can try out what a music store has to see if there is a problem and maybe ask a tech personally?

Re: cornet mouthpeice

You can definitely get a 14a4a with a cornet shank, so it should fit most cornets, unless they have been built badly, or mauled into a different shape.

I am going to try some out on wednesday (it's now monday where I am, if it's not where you are ;) ), so if you can wait till then I can tell you whether it will fit into a vintage getzen, hoping they have the same mouthpiece compatibility as a holton.
