| Piano User | Cornet Mouthpiece Howdy all, I'm doing a Clarke cornet solo (The Debutante) on my recital, and I wanted a mouthpiece that gave me a darker, more "cornety" sound. I currently play on a Mt Vernon cornet, which is already a brighter cornet than average, on a stock 1C mouthpiece, which is actually a bit too big for what I'd like. My prof recommended the Wick 2B mouthpiece, which I liked the sound on, but it fought the upper register even moreso than my 1C, and I was also looking at the Curry 1.5VC. So, any recommendations on which of these two, or others you'd like to chime in with would get the job done best? Anything helps, thanks!

| Pianissimo User | I haven't played these but they might be worth looking at: http://www.sparxmusic.com/cnt_produc...uthpiece.shtml Also you might want to try Bach B and no letter cups. If you are set on the 1 sizes, they make a 1.5B and 1X. Next smaller is 2, 3 and 3B. I play a Wick 3B and so do some of the front row cornets in my brass band, they don't seem to have any issues with range but they have been playing on them for some time.

| Fortissimo User | Unlike Budbix, I have played on a Sparx and currently have one. They do produce a sound much like the Denis Wick but whether or not it's a good match for your Mt. Vernon is difficult to say (I'm using it on my Eterna 800). Bud was right on when he suggested that you go to the website for Sparx; Ted has a good set of sound clips on there. Just bear in mind that those sounds are from the "Brass band" style of playing however and may not represent the sound concept of Clarke. |

Make sure that it is worth the risk. You will more likely be remembered for cracked notes that are possible if you are not comfortable, than with a "warmer" or "darker" sound. That being said..... I switched 2 weeks before my final recital (1974) in college from a Bach 1C to a Schilke 18 and it was like pulling a cork out. Everything fit better, sound, flexibilty and attack. I switched again before a heavy duty concert from the Schilke to a Monette B2. That switch took a bit more time - I made it through the concert and after 3-4 weeks I was able to realize the benefits as advertised.

![]() | A DW 2B is too big for most cornet soloists here in the UK,...the most used size is 4 and 4B. GR are good mpcs but quite expensive,...Sparx is also a GR mpc but is VERY expensive. DW are excellent and used by some of the best cornet soloists and are only about 1/4 the price of exotics makes. |

![]() | Try a Bach 6 or 6BM. Both have a 24 backbore and the 6 BM has a larger throat. Very nice cornet mouthpieces, and cheap to try.

![]() | When I got my Schilke XA1 about five years ago I picked up a Bach 5V mouthpiece and I fell in love with it. I can't imagine using anything else on that horn. You might give one a try. |

| New Friend | Try a Curry VC Mouthpiece (or a Flip Oaks cornet mouthpiece - also made by Curry). They're based on some of the mouthpieces of the American cornet soloists so they would probably more closely approximate the type of sound Clarke or his contemporaries would have achieved on their instruments. They are a bit brighter than Wick mouthpieces but produce a great sound. Wick mouthpieces sound fantastic, but to me they're a bit more "British" in sound than a piece like "The Debutante" would call for. Just my $.02. -Tom |
