Cornet MPC and Range?

I just got a Wick 3 Cornet MPC.
It sounds wonderful up to a G below high C.
Then it starts to sound like the Horn is being played 'out of range'.

Is this just a tradeoff with the cup design and size?
The mpc that came with the horn ('54 Olds Ambassador) isn't nearly as rich sounding. More 'pocket trumpet' when compared to the Wick but it does play higher.

It isn't that I want to scream on my Cornet :)
Just want to understand it.

thanks,
jmp

John, I own a Wick 4 and 4b. I don't know the right lingo to employ to explain this. Simply, above G atop the staff, the 4 was difficult to use unless I was fresh. I stuck with it for about 9 months then bought a 4b.

There is a difference in sound between the two. I guess I'd call it minor, but I'm glad I have the 4 still.

I use both happily.

There is something wonderful about the old "stovepipe" Wick with no letter.

Re: Cornet MPC and Range?

On the cornets I've played, mainly Besson (B&H) and Yamaha, high A has been one of those notes that interrupt the range. Hard to explain but almost as if there was a 'lump' in the scale at that note.

Time spent behind the mouthpiece cured it (ain't that the story with all brass instruments?).

Regards,

Trevor

Re: Cornet MPC and Range?

The problem in the high range can be leaky valves, the backbore or gap of the mouthpiece.
The Cornet is primarily conical in bore compared to a trumpet being cylindrical. This means that they play much differently - especially slurs and articulation. It could be that with that mouthpiece, that you do something weird with your tongue position when playing high - or that that hardware simply does not get along with one another.

Re: Cornet MPC and Range?

There's a tendency to pinch the lips on a mouthpiece that's deep and with such a large throat, attempting to get the upper register. If you're accustomed to small mouthpieces, you may be buzzing too small a portion of your lips on the Wick.

In my opinion, the thoats on the no-letter Wicks are too big. I played a Flip Oakes cornet mouthpiece with an 18 throat for a while, and it was too big for me. I suppose those pieces are for real men (or back-row players).
