Dennis Wick and Black Felt

How many of you take the black felt strip off your Dennis Wick straight mute and if you do.....

What do you think it does to the sound?

I have not taken the felt of the one I have and I don't know what it would do to the sound. I would guess it might be the slightest bit brighter. I have heard several people mention that they expanded the opening of the mute and that helped. Helped what? I have no idea.
