Digitech Vocal 300 Effects Processor

(Copied from TH, I thought some of you might be interested in this...)

Hey guys,

So sorry for the delay in getting this up. With my upcoming trip to New Orleans, a performance of the Stravinsky Octet Friday, and taxes (YEAH, they're done!) I've been a "wee" bit stressed.

A few of you have asked about integration of the Vocal 300 with a trumpet. While I'm finding out that there are DEFINITE drawbacks of a "multi" unit box this is so easy to set up and bring on gigs I haven't switched yet. Here are a few tips off my head:

1. Everytime you turn on/off the unit the master volume has to be tweaked. I thought it would stay the same but it really depends on each individual sound patch and PA combination.

2. In order to control the sounds I recommend using the unit as a seperate mix than your "house" mic if you need one. This way you can really control feedback issues as opposed to switching from the bypass mode. I usually use a SM57 with this unit and a SD LCM 77 for my house sound.

3. Make sure that the GATE settings are set very high. This way external bleed into the mic will not get into the mic. You can also really mess with the horn distance into the mic to create variations on each sound.

4. Make your own sounds. The unit's "factory preset" sounds are lame. You can make 40 user programmable sounds that will be suited for the horn's strengths. Be creative and experiment. I usually add one or two things to each sound. With so many user controlled options you can really get sounds completely original to your own pallette!

Here's two of the sounds in action from last week. I was using flugel and depending on my horn distance you can really change the color of the effect!

Here's another patch later on that night... I call it my brecker patch as it reminds me of Michael's Ewi sounds in the 80's a bit. notice at the end when I move back and forth it really changes the color and distortion! It's a two-octave above patch with a tight envelope filter and distortion when I change my volume/angle

I have another effect on my "youtube" clip on a Swana tune called "Through My Eyes". (see my signature)

It's taken me some time to "tame this unit" but IMO it's really worth it.

I'll add more when I think of it. I'm sure I left a ton out. Feel free to ask any questions and enjoy the clips.

-T
