| Forte User | Does anyone use a Schilke 14C4? I'm curious to know if there is anyone here who uses a Schilke 14C4 mouthpiece. The 14C4 is not a standard size offered by Schilke - if you want one, you have to order it as a 14A4, and then have a cup alteration done. I recently ordered a 14C4 mouthpiece from Schilke, dealing with Ken Hammond directly, and this is the reasoning that went into the decision: I have used a Schilke 14A4a for a long time, and recently decided to give the 14A4 (standard 'c' backbore) a shot and I found that I liked it a lot - it gave me the same feel with the same ease of upper register with a brilliant, crisp sound, but the more open backbore seems to have taken some of the lazerish edge off of the sound. Anyway, for whatever reason, the Schilke 14 mouthpiece with the #4 rim seems to be a good fit for me. I have bounced around a bit trying to find a "legit" mouthpiece that I like and it finally struck me - why not just get a Schilke 14C4 mouthpiece? It would have the same rim, same backbore, same general feel, but with a deeper cup. I'm just curious to know if anyone else has tried this option or had a similar situation, and what their impressions are. I'm not normally one to bounce around on equipment too much*, but I think that this is going to be a good way to go for me. * - I have made more equipment changes in the last year than in the last 5 or 6 years combined!

| Forte User | Well, I got the 14C4 today - I happened to see it in the door when I took my son home from school today after he called out sick - and I played on it just a touch before coming back to work. I think that it's going to be a decent mouthpiece - the sound is good and round, but the rim feels the same, although I wonder if a 14B4 might not have been a better choice. I'll post more as I use it a bit more.

![]() | I played a 13C4 [I know its not a 14C4 but close] for a number of years in a clown band. I bought a $40 pawn shop horn to use because we layed the horns down on the cement and flung them around alot. any way the 13C4 help give the cheap horn some core and helped the tone. very comfortable and easy blowing. old geezer Dave

| Forte User | I practiced a bit with it last night and was amazed how much I was missing and chipping. It's certainly not the most forgiving mouthpiece I have played. I suppose that like any mouthpiece change, there is going to be some acclimation issues. My hope is to be able to switch between the C cup and the A cup nearly seamlessly. I like the sound though - still brilliant, but more core and more round, and I can get some edge if I push it. You know, I guess I didn't really realize how defined the bite of that rim is - it's sharper than I thought, but I guess that I just didn't notice it quite so much on the more shallow mouthpiece. I'll continue to work with it and see if it gets any better. If it doesn't, I might end up going with a 14C2, and I think that is readily available without special order. *sigh* It would seem I'm back on the safari.

When I got home from taking my son home from school, I saw the box sitting between the two front doors where the UPS man left it. Most of the time, any package that is delivered and left on the step during the day is found first by my wife, a school teacher, who gets home from work much earlier than I do. I didn't tell her that I had ordered this mouthpiece and thus, I grinned ear to ear when I realized that I wouldn't have to explain it. Of course it's possible that she'll see it on the credit card statement, but by then, it will be old news!

![]() | Re: Does anyone use a Schilke 14C4? haha, fair enuf, I've been playing on a 14A4 for quite a few months now and im starting to gget on with it quite well, ive gone and bought a 14B for all round playing and love it, sometimes even more than my 14A4, i was expecting the cub to be shallower but its actually quite deep compared to the 14A4, anyway I really like them, but need a cornet one, bought a 3C for my cornet as the closest i could find withought spending loads of money but its not quite the same, so was looking at the 9C4 on ebay, but im not sure..... |

For players used to it, I would assume that it will take a while to get used to a C cup. Why? The shallow cup actually supports the lips much differently with an air cushion. The bigger mouthpieces do not provide that cushion and you have to train your chops to regain control. You have more muscle work, but a bigger, darker sound.
