sonicgeo2 has a spectacular aura about
Eb Trumpet Mouthpieces

Hi, I am a high school student and have been playing on a Getzen Eb trumpet for a bit and was wondering about mouthpieces for Eb trumpets. Does one usually play a different one than on Bb or C? I play a Bach 3C for my Bb and C playing, and my teacher (who is very knowledgeable) has had me playing my 3C on the Eb, but it doesn't feel comfortable. Thoughts?

Re: Eb Trumpet Mouthpieces

There is generally nothing wrong with using the same mouthpiece on the Eb if it is reasonably in tune. The higher pitched instruments often have intonation issues though that require something special. If there are some intonation issues, a more open throat makes the slots a bit "fuzzier". That means less work to "bend" the pitch into correct tune.

If the horn is being used in a brass choir, sometimes a lighter sound will improve the overall sound. A smaller or slightly more shallow mouthpiece helps here.

Bach 7E could work well for you, even a 3E is worth a try.

Re: Eb Trumpet Mouthpieces

I play trumpet in a dance band with a retired Conn/Selmer rep. that keeps telling me the letter of a Bach trumpet m.p. is the 'key' of the instrument it is made for. ie; 7C = 'C' trumpet/cornet, 7B = 'Bb', XE = 'E', etc... I really don't buy it but that is what he keeps telling me.

Apparently Monette has similar thoughts.

Does anyone really know or is this just more m.p. religion?

Re: Eb Trumpet Mouthpieces

As far as I know the letter on the Bach mouthpiece simply refers to the cup depth A deep to F shallow..........relating it to instrument type doesn't make sense to me.
