Effect of small dents?

Hi all,
Wonder what the tone and tuning effect of small dents is? I would think that if the abnormality is at an antinode there would be some issue.

Point being, how much priority should I place on getting them removed?

It is on my Olds I just got and they are not too bad, but there are about 6 dents I'd like to reduce in severity. 1'st and 2'nd slide mainly, and a couple up in the bell.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Effect of small dents?

It depends where the dents are. Leadpipe dents can affect the horn quite a bit, but bell dents not so much.

Re: Effect of small dents?

The main tuning slide is a little bit out of round at the midpoint of the curve, there is a small dent in the 2'nd vlave slide, and one slightly larger in the lower tube leaving the first valve body (not in the body, but in the tubing between the valve body and the slide. Some really small ones in the tube coming from the 1'st valve outlet to the bell .... sorry I do not know what to call it.

Thanks!

Re: Effect of small dents?

That's the bell tail.

My trumpet was basically mangled. The sound wasn't much different, actually, but it was a bit harder to play. I had Charlie Melk completely redo it (he's local to me, quiet you) and it played better and easier. He does more than just push the dents out; the horns he works on seem to have tubing rounded out and so forth. I'm guessing but don't know for sure that manufacturing "errors" are corrected when he's done. Of course you pay for the privilege.
