First Monette Mouthpiece

OK, so I am thinking about buying a Monette mouthpiece for when I get my Strad. I have played a Bach 7C the entire time I have played the trumpet, and I don't really know where to start as far as a new mp goes with Monette. Can anyone help who has made this transition or knows about which mouthpiece I should go for first?

BTW, about what kind of price tag am I looking at?

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

Try contacting Mike Thompson at thompsonmusic.com. He is very knowledgeable on the Monette mouthpiece line and can assist you in finding the one which will work for you. He also normally has a large selection of used mouthpieces in good condition, so you might be able to save some money.

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

Going to a Monette was a big help for me. That being said: It sounds by your post that you played a 7C because that's what you have for no special reason.

If I were you the first thing I would do is to find a mouthpiece that fits. I don't care what brand it is. It might be a 7C. It might be a 5E. Only you know what works. The most important thing is that it fits your chops.

After you have a fit, you can try different things to help your playing. You asked about pricing, from 200.00 to 300.00 for a Monette and well worth it. I wouldn't do a lot of experimenting at that price though. A new Bach is about 25.00

jazz9-

First things first--worry about finding your new trumpet. You've already decided on a brand and model, but you're probably going to have to play a bunch to find the right one for you. Do this on the mouthpiece you're used to. Getting a radically different mouthpiece at the same time that you're buying a brand new horn isn't a great idea.

Once you have your new horn, experiment with some new mouthpiece sizes. If you're on a 7C now just because that's what you started on, you might want to think about a Bach 5C, 3C or 1 1/4 C. Find what feels best. THEN, when you have a ballpark size, call up Thompson, or Monette directly and talk to them. They're great at helping you find the right mouthpiece.

-Jimi

PS. Do you have a private teacher? Even if you don't have on that you regularly study with, getting a couple of lessons with a local pro might really help when deciding on major equipment changes.

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

I second Jimi...get used the the new horn first and then if you feel like there's a problem with your mouthpiece (and you have decent fundamentals), you might want to try something new then. If you decide you want to try Monette, you can call the shop and they can help you pick out what will most likely work for you.

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

Do your parametric studies with Bach mouthpieces.
Here is what my parametric study was over about 15 years.
7c 5c 5D 3C 3d.
Smaller didn't work. A few mistakes along the way with yamaha shallow cups.
Please study the bach mouthpiece manual and try to set up a plan and take time trying each mouthpiece. In five years you will be ready to pay for the Monette name. There are plenty of others to try besides Monette. I never heard the need to pay a lot for a mouthpiece.

In my honest opinion, I believe that it's a huge mistake to make a horn and mouthpiece change at the same time. Get your new strad, and play your old MP.....get used to new slots, pitch, sound, overall feel, etc.
It's important to maintain a feeling of familiarity when making changes. Once you know the strad, then start to explore newer MP posibilities.
I would advise you to first try out a new Bach 3C.
Take your time.
Be patient.
Practice wisely.

PeaceRV

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

Hey Jazz9,

That's funny because I am about to do the same move... Replacing my Yamaha Signature "Rod Franks" model with a Monette mouthpiece. I don't know yet which one to choose but I will go with something about the same size than my present mouthpiece.

Re: First Monette Mouthpiece

As we are talking about Monette mouthpiece, is the market interesting for resale ? Say I don't want my Monette mouthpiece anymore, what would be the price drop ?
