Hi,

Have you considered a Curry TF or TC in your mouthpiece size? They get a nice, rich less edgy sound than trumpet or cornet. The TF is supposed to be a trumpet shank with a flugelhorn cup and special back bore.

Cheers,

Brian

Bob Reeves makes them:

Bob Reeves Brass Mouthpieces - Flugel to Trumpet Adapter, "A" Adapter for Schilke Piccolo Trumpets, and Cornet to Trumpet Adapter.

Playing flugel with a trumpet mouthpiece is a little pointless in my opinion. You use a different mouthpiece in order to achieve a different sound. Using a trumpet mouthpiece in a flugel will leave you in no-man's land. It takes a bit of practice, but you can get used to switching and getting the sound that you desire. I've yet to hear someone play flugel with a trumpet mouthpiece and get a decent sound.

Getting an adaptor to play in tune could be a challenge. However, Monette, Curry, Warburton, GR, and Wedge (to name a few) do make mouthpieces with a flugel cup and trumpet shank that work quite well.
Cheers,
Dave

I think he's talking about the opposite - using a flugel mouthpiece in a trumpet. You can't go from larger shank to smaller with an adapter.

Re: Fleugelhorn to trumpet mouthpeice adapter?

Dale,

You can play a European shanked flugel with a trumpet mouthpiece. And east-european gypsies do that. Still pointless.

FutureBC,
Play a trumpet with a flugel mouthpiece it is not much better - I tried that both with a Curry TF and a standard DW flugel mouthpiece. First of all, I don't think that anyone would need an adaptor for that - I plugged my DW in the trumpet and though it goes too far in, it fits - what you need is to pull out the tuning slide to get a decent pitch - but still a headache for intonation. Secondly you don't get a flugel sound or any near it - it is just a mellow trumpet sound in the low and middle register - in the high register it is quite obvious that this is not a flugel. If you want a flumpet sound, get a flumpet. Though the Monette flumpet is quite pricey there is some other companies that makes flumpet for a more reasonable price.

I agree. I used to have an old Olds cornet with the large mouthpiece receiver. A small Morse taper flugelhorn mouthpiece fit perfectly, and gave it a nice, rich cornet sound. What it didn't do, though, was play in tune. Intonation was terrible - one note sharp, the next one flat. Must have been a combination of the cup shape and backbore that didn't agree with that cornet.

Re: Fleugelhorn to trumpet mouthpeice adapter?

I recently acquired an old Holton flugelhorn from a friend who passed and wanted me to have it. (no model #, serial #552***) The mouthpiece that was with it is a Holton, stamped: 7C, the cup shape is elongated like a typical flugelhorn, but the shank is cornet-size. I want to use a Bach 1-1/2 C flugelhorn mouthpiece, but it only goes in 3/8". The pipe it goes into has a different finish than the rest of the horn and there is no taper internally. Is this an 'adapter' for a cornet mouthpiece? What should I do to use the Bach flugelhorn mouthpiece?
