Re: Flying with mutes

Be sure to take a good book and to pack them very carefully. Mutes aren't great conversationalists on long trips (or short ones for that matter).

Trevor

I plan on reading Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose.

Is there anything in specific that you recommend I pack them in. They will be in the belly of the plane in my suitcase.

Re: Flying with mutes

Oh dear, what a waste!!

Wrap them up in your clothes and put them in the middle of the bag and they'll be fine. The odd dent and scratch is a right of passage.

Re: Flying with mutes

Be aware that they might freak out security people a bit...

I played a political function in DC once (Reagan) and the Secret Service was questioning my friend about his Harmon mute.
He grabbed the stem and said "you pull this out and then you count to three..." They weren't amused :)

The best I ever got was the really bored TSA officials wanting to know about this long tube I had wrapped up on the security check conveyor belt (LaGuardia Airport NYC, 10pm Sunday night). A real, live didgeridoo was fairly unknown to them, so I had to play an impromptu performance at the checkpoint to convince them that this was in fact a musical instrument and wasn't really a piece of four-foot wooden tubing for launching projectiles at airplanes.

Student Trumpet: put your mutes in your carry-on bag, in the middle surrounded by a t-shirt or three. That way, the only dents they receive are the one you give them. You may have to explain why they aren't drug paraphenalia (you know, metal tubes with holes) at the security checkpoint, but as long as there is no incriminating residue (ie, you better not be using your Harmon mute as a bong), you should be fine. It helps if you are carrying your trumpet in the under-the-seat bag, ready to play for security on-demand.

Music soothes the bureaucratic beast.
