| got my schilk got my schilke 17d4 yesterday that i had ordered. as i remembered the #4 rim is great. i like the feel and the tone, the only thing so far from switching from my 3c is that my range has suffered. im sure after practicing with it over some time that it will come back. |

As confirmed by the Kanstul Comparator at Kanstul Mouthpiece Comparator and my own experience, the 3C you used to play had the cup depth of a Bach 7E. The Schilke 17d4 is like a Bach 7B, but the Bach has a liitle bit more of a "V" shape while the Schilke has more of a cup shape, giving the Schilke a fuller sound but much harder upper register. To put it in Schilke terms, you have just moved from a Schilke "A" cup to a Schilke "D" cup. And the change in rim contour is just as dramatic, from the round rim of the Bach 3C to the wide flat Schilke "A" rim. So I guess we can expect no double C's from you for the next few weeks, just that annoyingly full, rich sound that some trumpet players prefer - morris | |

![]() | Re: got my schilk Is I read the different charts, your mouthpiece in Bach termswould be about a 1B (yeah, yeah, I know, different backbore, cup design, rim design, etc.) and the changes you're noticing are normal for a move to a larger and deeper mouthpiece. It'll get better, but don't plan on making it your lead piece quite yet! |

![]() | Re: got my schilk No extra attempt to hide stuff here--I like to think of the bigger, deeper mouthpieces as passive/aggresive, letting us play wicked deadly loud without too much edge. In a big band setting, with saxophones using metal mouthpieces and a whole bunch of trombones, the characteristic lead sound is made much easier by a shallower cup, like your 14A4a. |

| Re: got my schilk The larger the Schilke number the larger the mp. The smaller the Bach number the larger the mp. If you do well range wize with the Bach 3C then try the Schilke 14A4a. |
