How do you measure MP throat size?

I need to know the size of the throat on a custom mouthpiece that I recently purchased. What tool do you use to measure it and what kind of store could I go to obtain one? There are no trumpet repair shops close to me. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Steve

Contact the manufacturer. That is the easiest way to find out.

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

Aren't they just metric drill bit sizes?

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

So I could go to like Lowes or Home Depot and buy metric drill bits in several sizes near what I think it is and that would tell me what I need to know?

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

You need a drill index of numbers drills. A 20 is bigger than 27. They are wire sizes I think.

20 is .0161" which is close to 4.1mm.

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

They're number-series, not metric.

If you were serious about this, you would buy one each from 28 through 20.

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I understand now. For example a #20 drill bit is 0.161" in diameter whereas a #25 drill bit is 0.149" in diameter. Thus the smaller the throat size (=drill bit size#) the bigger the throat.

Re: How do you measure MP throat size?

You can see a lot of common sizes on this in both wire size and metric with conversions to inches.

Machinist Drill Sizes - ANSI Size Drills, ISO Metric Drill Sizes - Engineers Edge

You could also purchase a pin gauge set, which would allow you to fine tune your measurements.

M1 Minus Plug Pin Gage Gauge Set 0.061-0.250" - eBay (item 250524004893 end time Nov-09-09 08:36:46 PST)

Cheers,
