i am new to trumpet, and need mouthpiece help.

i normally play trombone so i am having to cope with what for me is a really tiny mouthpiece 3c

i know with more "face time" on the horn ill get better tone, but what mothpiece will make the transition more smoothly?

If you're a HS kid, 3c is fine for a few years. Don't go chasing mouthpieces for at least 5 years--that's not the issue here. Just start playing as much as possible, big relaxed quiet breath, imagine a great sound, and play a lot of lyrical things. Find a good sounding teacher you can listen to, and recordings of Doc, Maurice, and Herseth. You'll get it together.

im in college, and have been playing trombone for about 9+ years.

ill play as much as i can but really trumpet is just a throw around toy for me. i do hope to get better but not at the expense of losing my trombone chops.

OK. Sounds like you're just having fun--I was thinking you were seriously switching horns. 3c is still a decent choice. One of the best trombone pros in Minneapolis plays some mean trumpet once in a great while, and he plays it way off to one side. Might be something to consider. He actually gigs very occasionally on trumpet, but is a killer trombone pro.

not switching. maybe a little doubling and gig thievery

so i guess i just need to get used to it.

i did notice when i played my trombone today after about 15 minutes on my cornet, i had this thick smooth sound.

i think my embouchure was more focused. the sound was sexy

It takes time but you will eventually get used to the size difference. When I was in college I doubled on trombone using a bach 11C ,while using a Bach 5C on trumpet. Rember if you play two instruments you must practice twice as much.

I'm going through the same sorta thing in reverse to you...

I'm playing trumpet at university (music degree), and have recently bought and started playing a trombone!

I find that it's almost like developing two fairly independant embouchures, and that I have to make sure that I practice both horns every day. I'm finding that trombone helps loosen me up a bit and gets me using some more air.

true, im using a big Bach 5GS on trombone, so the trumpet mouth piece feels so tiny in comparison. ill see if i get used to it before i invest in a mouthpiece.

if you are looking for a mouthpiece for trombone id recommend the schilke 51c4 for jazz, and the bach 5GS for classical. but those are kinda big and just what i am used to.

so far i have noticed i love my sound on trombone after i play a bit on my cornet.

Re: i am new to trumpet, and need mouthpiece help.

Just be sure when you switch to trumpet after playing trombone you don't force the sound. You are used to paying a larger horn so you'll find it easy to over blow the trumpet. relax the air on the trumpet, play at no more than a MF until your body adapts to the change in air flow. I would suggest you find some easy trumpet solo music at first. stay in the middle range for a while until the trumpet starts to fill like "home".

Have fun.
