The Ideal Mouthpiece

Hey all...haven't posted in a while.
I'm getting ready to go back to school and I'm looking at getting a new mouthpiece. I'm already getting a Curry 3C, recommended by a trumpet instructor. I was also thinking about getting another mouthpiece, an "ideal" one that'll last me hopefully at least a few years, and preferably "specializing" (if that's the right word) in upper range (and yeah, I know about the whole "unplayables" thing).
I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as far as mouthpieces go, or past experiences with mouthpieces that worked really well for them. Also, I'd like to know about favorite brands...'ppreciate it!

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

Trying to advise someone on mouthpieces via the internet is tough but I would definitly check out GR. they make great pieces and will help you find what fits you best

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

Seek out a Curry 3* for lead, and if you want a great big orchestral sound, a Curry 3BC.
Call Mark (or email him) direct, or see what Dillon's has.

Obviously, GR could set you up with great combinations, too!

Hi,

Does the "ideal" mouthpiece exist?

Elusive, ay? I wonder why?

Best wishes!

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

Also look at Stork mouthpieces. I play a Vacchiano 3c and 3d and they're both great. the 3c has a nice orchestral sound, and the 3d has the same core sound, just with a little more bite in the upper register. well worth a look i'd say...

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

You are just the kind of inquirer that I would like to mess with.....jokingly.

Before you run out to buy a 14a4A I'll sell you one of mine.

I would like to sell you my 13a4A but it has my initials on it.

Buy a Bach 3D at your local music store and try it out for 6 months to a year. Then attend the International trumpet guild conference in 2009 and try all the mouthpieces you can. You might like a 7D or 7E because I don't know. You might like the jet tones. Or, borrow a French horn and try it for awhile. A FH has a deep V cup with a narrow rim.

Fly to Portland, Oregon and try some Monette MPs.

There are a bunch of conferences you can attend and play all kinds of gear.
One more item. Your mouthpiece quest will require a 3 horn leather gig bag.

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

If the Curry 3C is going to be your main mouthpiece, then by all means stick with Curry! The great thing about Curry mouthpieces is that you'll get to enjoy that same 3 rim on any of his cups. The 3* as mentioned, or the 3Z is worth checking out. If you order them in the Curry blank, consider adding a Monstersleeve-it looks kind of cool and actually does something.

Re: The Ideal Mouthpiece

Don't think about it - just do it. There is no math or second hand experience that means anything, so go for it! Only your face and wallet will know for sure. There is not a brand out there that somebody isn't happy with, so our advice is REALLY helpful.
I play Monette. I let them figure it out. That is what they do for a living!
Tom Turner had a great suggestion (seriously) from the bakery department - do a search on "cookie-cutter mouthpiece"
