Importance of snug fit between MP and receiver

Today I bought a Kanstul replica of the Monette B4FLT. I like the feel and the tone very much, but there seems to be an issue with the fit with the receiver on my Schilke X3.

The MP is a STC-2 style (as pictured here, third from the left) so there is a short shank and a large, bulky mass and then the rim. The receiver consumes the entire shank and the end of the receiver and rests against the flat bottom end of the large mass. The fit is very close to being just perfect, but has just the tiniest bit of play (almost unnoticeable) and the MP can be freely rotated in the receiver without "tightening up". If I wrap a single sheet of paper around the shank, it tightens up.

Is this going to be a problem? Obviously there is a risk of the MP falling out if the horn is inverted, but it is not noticeably loose and flopping around, and it doesn't seem to effect playability at all.

Not a good fit and it is important!

A good fit is important. There are a few ways to properly correct this, but they all involve going to a repair tech.
Messing with this will also mess with the gap between the mouthpiece and the leadpipe.

That's what I was afraid of. Its quite sad because it is sooooooo close to being a perfect fit.

Is modifying the MP - perhaps with a tiny shim - an option?

I'd rather muck with a $100 MP instead of the horn which I quite like how it plays now with all my other MPs.

Re: Importance of snug fit between MP and receiver

Wrapping a bit of tape around the shank will make it fit and it should play fine. Not elegant, but easy. You could have someone put the mouthpiece in a lathe and take a bit off the bottom of the shoulder. It would take about 2 minutes.

Cheers,
Dave

I feel the lathe is the only reasonable option. Metal to metal is the best mass coupling and that definitely helps.

A tech should make sure that the fit is snug and the gap reasonably correct.

Well, I contacted Kanstul and they offered to put it on the lathe and make it work for me. I live about 20 minutes from the factory, so I think I will have them take a crack at it. I'll be sure they address the gap while I am there.

This is my first time dealing with Kanstul, and they have been fantastic. Great customer service!
