Impulse purchase - Mount Vernon 2 1/2C

I've have just impulsively bought a Mount Vernon 2 1/2C on ebay for about $140, because I was about to buy a new 2 1/2C anyway, and didn't want to pass the opportunity to try this rare piece. BTW, I have never tried a MV mouthpiece before.

My question is, have I paid over the odds, or is this about right for a great condition mouthpiece of this type and era? My thinking on this is that I might be able to make my money back on it if I don’t like it..

Any opinions would be gladly received to put my mind at ease..

Thank you all in advance!

Matt.

Re: Impulse purchase - Mount Vernon 2 1/2C

No magic in the music, just a collectors item. Price is not the determining factor unless shifting used instruments is your livelihood.

The chance of a state of the art playing experience is about zero. That being said, there are too many fine players to count whose playing with "standard" equipment is state of the art. If this thing gets you REALLY motivated, then it is just fine.

There are not enough of these things being sold to say if that price can be recouped if you don't like it. You just need the right customer at the right time.

Re: Impulse purchase - Mount Vernon 2 1/2C

Thanks rowuk, I guess you're right!

I'm looking forward to trying this mouthpiece, because having played a Bach 1 1/4C for most of my playing career (about 23 years), I tried a 2 1/2 C a few months back and really liked the feeling of it - slightly more responsive and easier projection in the upper range.

I know there seems to be a lot of hype around Mount Vernon equipment, but many have said that their trumpets and mouthpieces help to make a sound preferable to the more recent Bach offerings.

I'll be interested to try it against a modern day 2 1/2C..

I'll post my findings.

Regards,

Matt.
