Looking for a mouthpiece

I have been playing the trumpet for 6 years and was thinking about purchasing a new mouthpiece. I play in a latin style band in a church and would like to have my sound more richer. I am currently using a 7C. I would like some thought into it.

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

See if you can borrow a 3C or say a 10 1/2C from someone for a while and give it a whirl. Should tell you if you'd like a larger or smaller rim. But you need to try a few out and see what you think. Also need to know why you want a different piece. Too dark, too bright, flexibility, comfort of the rim..... Need to know what you are looking for in this potential change. If you don't have any complaints, then you might say why bother in the first place.

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

All the other players I know are using a 7C, same as me. The problem is that I am looking for something that gives a clearer note. With a 7C, I am getting a sort of "windy" notes. The notes comes out but not as clear as I want it (with a hissing sound). It might be my ombuture(sp?).

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

Do you have a teacher? I'm not sure, but it might be too small for you. Before I switched to GR, I played on a Bach 5c and the size was ok but I hated the feel of the rim. Best thing to do is go to a store that let's you try them out before you buy.

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

I am no longer in school so no, I don't have a teacher. As for the mouthpiece, I do think I need a mouthpiece that is a little bit bigger (probably a 5C or maybe a 3C). I would like to test the mouthpiece but I can't find a place in or around Boston, MA that sells brass products, let alone test them before purchasing.

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

Are you kidding? Guess you probably haven't looked too hard as the two stores below are some of the best brass stores in the country.

Rayburns in Boston is excellent and Osmun Music in Arlington fantastic. Osmun Music-Instruments, accessories, and service for serious musicians

good luck in your search!-T

Re: Looking for a mouthpiece

Thanks, that helps. I don't go to Arlington but Rayburn is right near Symphony Hall. Since I go to Roxbury nearly every day, I can stop by there on the way home.

Elli,
try and get a lesson with Trent. You will know for sure if it is hardware or software that you need after that!
Much, much better than laying down money for something that may not help medium term!
