The rim is just one of the many factors governing mouthpiece design. The exact same rim in gold and silver feel entirely different. I think you should get educated before making any mouthpiece decisions. Calling Dean at the Monette shop is a very good first start. Just don't waste his time if you don't want to spend between the $200 to $300 that the mouthpiece will cost.

Oh! BTW - the Monette link will provide the answers you seek, add to that a phone call to Monette and a committment of a couple of hundred bucks and voila, solution - THEN you can laugh out loud.

![]() | Re: LOUD to Monette [quote=tedh1951;457955]I'm having a little difficulty here - maybe I'm just grumpy this morning (or one of the other 6 dwarves) but I'm having difficulty working out why I need to lol ? - You have a problem that you have expressed reasonably well in your post, but I don't see any cause to lol about it - what the...? The lol is a protection device. It's an attempt to keep things light to avoid being attacked, which has been known to happen. To give a rough interpretation of Rowuk's comment. The 'science of mouthpiece' is extremely complex. By changing one aspect of a mouthpiece, it can set off a chain of events which may not be what you thought might happen. We are all learning about mouthpiece technology. Even the masters like Monette are learning and discovering new things all the time. By seeking the advice of a person that dedicates a considerable amount of time to research, you can lessen the grief a little. Most mouthpiece companies have a mouthpiece guru that you can talk to. I got up in the middle of the night and rang monette. I am so glad I did. They can foresee problems that I hadn't even considered. Be careful that you are changing mouthpieces for a reason other than to check out the hype. I play a monette because it suits and it aleviated some issues that I had with my previous mouthpiece.

![]() | Re: LOUD to Monette Ted, You seemed to have an issue with the lol. Just explained my take on it. Yes you did say similar to me. We must both be informative, intelligent posters. The main part of my post regarded Rowuk's 'get educated' statement. He is 100% correct but his choice of words may have been interpreted as being in a somewhat negative vein. When you put the word 'get' in front of a verb, it puts the verb in a different light. eg.'Get lost, get bent, get over it'. There is a grammatical explanation for this phenomenom that my father who was an English teacher explained to me when I told him to 'get a life'. This was just prior to him inflicting his Blundstone boot in order to make his point stick.'Now which dwarf was it? Further in Rowuk's defence, there are obvious linguistic conventions that are specific to certain cultural groups. It might be fine to say 'get educated' in another country. My German is non-existent so who am I to criticize someone who is bilingual? Just trying to stay positive regarding the original poster.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: LOUD to Monette This doesn't answer the question but just a suggestion. I recommend a Bach mouthpiece for my students. I don't know how old you are but it seems that you are having basic mouthpiece questions. I don't think that Bach is the best or worst mouthpiece. I just think they are very middle of the road. You can get a very good foundation and then when you have specific questions or changes that you want to make, we or a teacher can guide you with a point of reference. Along with Bach being a very stable type of mouthpiece, it's cheap. Think about it, waist 30.00 on a Bach and have something to work from or possibly waist 300.00 because you bought the wrong Monette.
