Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

Um, I'm not using this on my horn but a friend is using it on his. It is OK? Frankly I think Pennzoil would be too good for that horn, but if the Marvel stuff is not really good i'll give him my spare valve oil once I find it.

Uh, somehow I don't think it was meant for a trumpet. I'm sure someone else can tell you for sure. I wouldn't use it. I use ultra pure and it's awesome.

Hm, at first I thought it smells minty, but it actually smells like pepto-bismol.

I think it's too thick, personally.

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

Marvel Mystery Oil is a lubricant for combustion engines. It is not designed to work in a cool, moist environment like a trumpet, nor was it intended to be used at the relatively low speeds that valves travel at. There is a reason that valve oil is THIN.
I would also assume that Marvel is toxic and the valves are very close to your face, you inhale deeply and aerosols from the oil could end up in your lungs.
Only use real name brand valve oil like Ultra Pure on trumpet valves. There you can be sure that the valves are protected and fast

Hi,

How many miles per gallon are you getting on that trumpet with the oil?

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

They also market Marvel Mystery oil for Air Tools which operates in a COOL environment when running (Tools can get down right COLD).

Still think it would be too thick.

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

I have a friend that uses lamp oil with a few drops of Marvel Mystery Oil added to the bottle. He's been doing this for years and swears by the stuff.

Lately I've been using Ultrapure. PDQ was great but I couldn't deal with the fumes.

STP can be used on slides. It was once sold as slide lube.

I would think Marvel Mystery oil could be used as slide oil.

Most engine additives have molybdenum in suspension. Don't ingest it.
