Metal Valve Guides

Ok, I've gone through 3 different nylon (delrin?) valve guides on my Bach 37H in the last year. Each one gets a groove in it that allows the valve to spin freely in the case, eventually to the point that it causes unexpected problems...
Anyway, this is an older horn and has never had this problem before, so I don't know the cause, although I expect it's either my playing habits or something in the casing that's grooving those guides.

Should I buy some metal guides, and if so, where do I get them?

-J

this is only the first valve, all the other valves have been fine. And I know the brassbow had them but their website is messed up.

Re: Metal Valve Guides

If the first valve guide is wearing that much faster than the rest, I would get your horn looked at. The delrin guides have the advantage of being light, quiet and keeping the wear on the disposable piece of plastic - NOT the valve.
I don't want to start a voodoo war, but if the delrin has that much of a problem, you will also get wear with a metal guide - the question is what will wear. Get the horn looked at!

Re: Metal Valve Guides

Hi,

Do metal valve guides make more noise (clatter) when the instrument is being played? If so, I don't think that I would like that.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Metal Valve Guides

In Jarretts' horn they will probably sound like grinding teeth!
If the instrument is properly adjusted, the player may NOTICE something, but the audience won't. Clattering happens mostly when the corks or felts on the valves are worn.

Don't suppose you could post a pic of one of the used up guides, could ya? I'm having a hard time imagining what's going on here.

Re: Metal Valve Guides

Hey I tried my best but I couldn't get a decent picture. I guess I'm kinda in the dark as to how something like this could happen. Unfortunately if I can't fix it myself, it's not going to get fixed for a while beacuse there aren't any repair men for a long ways...
