Microphone?

I am curious to know what would be the best buy for a microphone under $100 (quality wise). I want to plug one into my laptop and record on Audacity. I have no recordings of myself, and would like to record more for listening to my progression.
Thanks in advance,

Chris

Re: Microphone?

I got a simple MIC from Staples and I use THAT and Sound Recorder that came wtih my computer. I have several audio files of my progression.

This IS a good idea to do. My sister in law's friend has a "snowball" Mic hooked into her computer. but that's more than the $100 you or I want to spend.

Hope things are sounding better and better for your trumpet playing.

Some laptops already have good mikes built into them, my HP Compac does, so check that out first. When I mean good, I mean they will record trumpet without distortion provided you adjust the level appropriately.

I have a Gateway tablet customized laptop. (for school) It picks up the trumpet alright, but not as well as I would like it to.

Re: Microphone?

Forum,

I use a (no kidding) a H-P headset with microphone. I stand back about 3 feet and it has a decent recording fidelity. For the money, it's not bad.
BUT.. I only use it for my own critique. The software I use is Audacity, again, it is free. I did copy some vinyl LP's to CD's via Audicity and it worked great. This is provided that the turn table / needle / LP / correct amplification from the turntable is all in order.

I was going to invest in a Sno Ball .. They go for about $85.00 new on eBAy. Since the headset mic worked for what I wanted, I invested in another mouthpiece.

Take Care,

Re: Microphone?

I like the Samson CO1U. It's a studio-style condenser mic w/usb for under $80. I record my students playing duets in Garage Band. They sound great (most of the time).

Re: Microphone?

Is there a reasonable way to plug a Shure PG57 or SM57 into a laptop?

If your laptop has microphone level input (most likely a 1/8" jack), then you'd need an adapter cable (XLR female to 1/8" male).
