Question "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

Hi, Everyone- Say: Does anyone know where to find a Harmon Mute for Flugelhorn? I've been searching for one off-&-on since the 70's! I do have a Cup Mute made for Flugelhorn which I found by chance- (definitely a keeper!) Are they available in Germany or England? Thanks for the help & Best Wishes! -Blue Brown!

Re: "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

Did Miles ever use a mute in the Martin Flugelhorn? I have never heard of Miles doing that.

Re: "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

Maybe Miles did not play on a flugelhorn harmon mute, but Art Farmer did. I have the recording, "Big Blues" where Art plays with Jim Hall. If I find out more about it (I have been reading a chapter from a book on Art where I am sure he talks about it), I will let you know soon. I play on a Martin Imperial flugelhorn.

On occasion, I will use a Jo-Ral Trombone Bubble Mute on fluglehorn. It has a sound similar to that of Art Farmer's on "The Big Blues".

Long Live Art Farmer and Miles Davis!

Jo-Ral makes a copper bottom bubble mute for the flugelhorn. They are around $65.00

I actually tried out a couple of "flugel" mutes.....the sound on the bone mute was much more appealing to me. BTW, I use an alluminium mute.

Re: "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

I know you are right about that, Ray- I just looked at the Jo-Ral Website, and when I saw the Bubble Mute, remembered trying-out a friend's & having the same feeling- that the Jo-Ral really does Not have the "Stemless Harmon Sonority" -that full, round & intimate, mood-setting sound! I know what you mean about the Trombone Harmon- I do have one- (it's Aluminum) but... it sort of Sticks-Out & the sound wants to be too open... (I have'nt decided to modify it yet, though!) I remember a British Hornman having a red & White Plastic Flugel Harmon Mute, back in the late 60's... At any rate, I think there's a real need to bring a full line of Mutes for Flugelhorns onto the market! The fact there's not, really causes the Flugelhorn to be kind of an 'odd-lookin' clarinet-whatchacallit thing' in the eyes of the public. Certainly, when a Band or Ensemble Leader thinks of a Brass Horn-Section, they think Trumpets! I think The Flugel should have just as much of a Sound Pallette as The Trumpet. after all, they're made with just as much Precision nowadays, and there's Players who can produce all the Range that might be needed in the Studio or in the Horn Section! Check-out Arturo Sandoval on Flugel, or German Jazzman Till Bronner playing his version of Freddie's: 'Little Sunflower' on YouTube! Thanks, Again, Everyone! -Blue Brown!

Re: "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

There was a recent post pointing the way to a nice You-tube video featuring Mr Farmer. He was playing open flugel, but sitting on the piano was his flugel harmon (style) mute, and it doesn't appear to be any mainstream recognizable brand. It has an unusual shape, which may account for the fact that when he did use it, the result was much nicer than any I've ever heard from the usual mute makers.
Sorry I don't recall the name of the tune in the video ( I'm old), but I'm sure you can find it by searching the You Tube library for Art's name. Someone, somewhere might recognize it and point us in the right purchasing direction.

Re: "Miles Davis" Flugelhorn Mute!

Further investigation.... on the you-tube video of "Blue Monk" you can hear ( and see) Art with the harmon in.. sounds great.Just search under his name>

Then on "Recorde Me" he plays open flugel and you can see the ( oddly shaped) harmon sitting on the piano. It is, indeed, different from any I've ever seen, but sounds terrific. Anybody identify it? Have one for sale or rent?
