Re: Are monette mouthpieces the best* mouthpieces

that's a LOT of money for a piece of metal with a very thin sheet of gold plate on top of it....

I'll stick with Bach and Yamaha.

If you look at it that way, 30.00 is a LOT of money for a piece of metal with a very thin sheet of silver plate on top of it....

you get my point...
for the price of 1 monette, you can get 3 very good trumpets of pretty much any other brand.

I thought we were talking about mouthpieces.

It's true, Monette's do cost more.
If you want the feel and sound of a Monette, you have to pay for it.
If you want the feel and sound of a Bach or whatever, you have to pay that price.

A guy that is playing on an Eastman trumpet probably thinks a Bach is too expensive. Everything is relative.

Re: Are monette mouthpieces the best* mouthpieces

I'm sure that this has been said before, but in comparison to other instruments, we trumpeters get off very lightly. I've seen sax players pay £500 for a mouthpiece, oboeists pay way over £10k for an instrument - even flautists pay £5k for a piccolo without blinking. (Do flautists blink actually? )

All I'm saying is that in relation to what other musicians pay for their instruments - if you're a pro or even a serious amateur player, then discounting Monette's (et al) because of their high price is plain silly.

The guys that work there (Monette) - as in all the other small 'boutique' custom shops know their stuff - they know what makes a horn work in a specific way. They also have learned how to interpret us (the players) as to what we want from a horn. They are at the top of their field in terms of craftsmanship - that's what you're paying for - their knowledge and experience. You just don't get access to that with a standard production horn.

Will making the bell 0.1mm thicker help it project better - I don't know - but these guys will.

It doesn't matter what it says on the bell or what the price tag is at the end of the day. If you paid £10 or £10K for your horn - it's yours and you make your own sound on it. If you're happy with what comes out the end, then why change?

I've been lucky enough to have played many, many production horns, tweaked & customised horns and student horns - all the way through to several Monette's,

Personally, I can see the difference - I think that they are worth many times more than their asking price, because they bring something else to the table that allows us, the players to hopefully become better and more complete musicians.
