Monette Piccolo MPC

I have been playing my schilke picc lately and I don't feel totally comfortable on my mouthpiece. I started with a Schilke 14a4a which came with the horn and I hated it. I quickly ordered a Stork 2P which my teacher uses. (I felt very comfortable on this mouthpiece when I was playing his picc: Stomvi Elite). I had tried it on my horn and it felt pretty good, at least, better than the schilke. I feel like there could still be some improvement, although it is very possible that it is just my inexperience on a difficult instrument. I bring up the Monette idea because I play a Monette B2 on my Bb and C2 on my C trumpet and Eb/D Trumpets. I heard that Wynton plays a monette on his Picc but he changes to a smaller rim. Has anyone played monette mpc's on their piccs? It is probablly worth a try, if I can find one but does anyone have a size recommendation. I will trying an AP2 and see what the same width rim feels like and also an AP5 which is smaller (wyton's picc mpc). Any others?

Thanks,

Jacob

Re: Monette Piccolo MPC

I kind of like the AP4 for certain performances. My normal sound preference for picc is to be a bit darker because I most often perform as a soloist. However, when playing with a large group such as a choir for the Hallelujah Chorus, I need a little more edge. The AP4 does that very nicely. Many people will prefer that brighter sound all of the time. I find it very easy to play on a Schilke P5-4.

I play one of Dave's lead mouthpieces on my Selmer piccolo. It's the B15 LD 4LD. That's for Messiah's, B minor mass, and most solo stuff I use a slightly shallower one for Brandenburg, M. Haydn... the Prana B5 LM 84.

There ya go...

Here goes nothing: I'm going to give the full time pro some advise.
For a long time I did just what Manny is doing. In one of my lessons I was struggling a little with tuning so my teacher told me to try his BP5. What a huge difference.

Manny, the mouthpiece you are using is counter productive. I am a huge believer in the piccolo mouthpieces and in the different size for different keys. I think Shilke picc. trumpets use a cornet mouthpiece. The same idea as Monette.

It's hard for me to tell a pro about playing but, you can get the sizes you use in the picc. mouthpiece and the trumpet will play way better.

By the way, my experience with the mouthpiece change was on my Selmer.

Manny, If I can give you advise that will help your playing it will be the thrill of my life!!!

Re: Monette Piccolo MPC

Thanks for the advice. Would it be wise to go with a smaller width than my B2/C2 set up? AP5 perhaps?

Thanks, Joe... I take what you have to say with good spirit. I tried what you advocate with the shorter picc mouthpieces and for whatever reason it didn't seem to work as well. Mostly, it seemed to make the horn a litle squirrely because i had to pull the slide on my Selmer out too far or so it seemed.

But I'll tell you what: I'll give it a go again and let you know if it works better this time around. Maybe it was my imagination but I'll be happy to try again.

Thanks, Joe.

If this works I'm going to print this stuff and frame it.
It's hard to tell you stuff like this because you can't argue with results and you are one of the best!

I asked Dave to make a lead pipe for my picc. and He said no, so I went to Blackburn. I use the Blackburn pipes with the Monette mouthpiece.

I did give up on my Selmer Picc. although I still have it. I use the Blackburn pipes in the Sherzer with the Monette mouthpiece.

Re: Monette Piccolo MPC

I also play B2/C2/B2D but AP5 and BP5. My picc focusses much better with the smaller size.
I think Manny could make a trombone mouthpiece sound good on his Selmer. Piccs are much more sensitive to small changes. It could very well be that when Manny has to pull his tuning slide out too far, the playing characteristics of the Selmer change for the bad. Even the best mouthpieces need a balanced horn in behind them.......
