Monette testing

I recently got to try a friends Monette B15M and got along with it fine. Nice full sound and very 'easy'.

The only discernible problem that I encountered was that attacks were a lot less crisp than on my Bach (or GR). Has anybody else experienced this or is it a function of acclimatisation?

Regards,

Trevor

Re: Monette testing

Your problem might indeed be a problem of acclimation. Also, you might want to try one of the newer "PRANA" configurations. Monette is now making mouthpieces in a new "PRANA" "slap" configuration. This is a mouthpiece with a slightly sharper inner rim - which allows for more "pointed" attacks.

I play on a Monnete PRANA Bb LTJ trumpet with
Monnette PRANA MF III & B4LD mouthpieces

Shawn -
You are certainly correct about the slap cups having more pointed attacks, and I agree with your recommendation that Trevor give them a try.

As I understand from conversations with the Dean Comley and Dave Monette when I last visited the shop, the rims are the same on slap and non-slap versions. (I couldn't feel any difference when play-testing either.) The more distinct attacks are due to differences in the shape of the area near the bottom of the cup (before it transitions to the throat).

I only point this out so that anyone who has a Monette rim they like doesn't worry that the rim will be different if they move to a slap cup. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how they are made - they are just great mouthpieces that are worth a try.

Re: Monette testing

When I went to a Monette mouthpiece I found just the opposite. The attacks were almost too much.

Just keep the air flowing and the attacks will be there. You don't need to over articulate. Over-articulating and getting a forced tubby attack was my initial problem with the Monette, but all I needed to do was back off not work so hard. The Monettes give a little different feedback to the player, but the attack will go where it counts (out to the hall). Record yourself if you can, you'll probably be fine in a week or two. Or less.

Re: Monette testing

I had the same experience as the two last posters. I noticed it after listening to recording playbacks and learned to ease off the attacks.

Re: Monette testing

OK thanks guys.

I'll try backing off and recording myself. Great advice as usual.
