Mouthpiece Comparison

Hi, I'm looking for a new trumpet mouthpiece. I really don't know anything about them so I will describe my playing and maybe you can send me in the right direction.

My peers strongly recommend a Monette & that's what I'm looking for. I will be using this for HS marching, concert & jazz band. I want a solid tone, but I want to be able to play some high notes (only to about f over high c above the staff).

Please do not say that I have to try them out, I simply can't. Thanks :).

Re: Mouthpiece Comparison

K, so if you live in the US, you can try them out. Thompson music has a trial period for monette pieces.
2nd, suggesting pieces (even based on what people say over the internet) is shaky at absolute best. More often, it can be dangerous and counter-productive, particularly given that you haven't mentioned what size mpc you currently play, what you would like to change about your current mpc, what you like about your current mpc, and what you dislike about it.
If you want the best possible advice on monette mouthpieces, then call up the monette shop (they have contact info) and talk to them about it - they will very happy to help

A Monette mouthpiece isn't going to do this any better for you than any other, less expensive mouthpiece. There isn't anything wrong with playing a Monette, but shooting in the dark, and trying to get a $230 mouthpiece to accomplish this is not a wise thing to do.

What mouthpiece do you play on now? How is your tone and range now? There are many excellent mouthpieces out there that will fit your general criteria. Warburton, Reeves, Stork, GR, Curry, Laskey, Marcinkiewicz, etc., but Improving sound and range doesn't have as much to do with equipment as it does with development as a player. Does equipment help? Yes, if it is the right equipment for you.

I currently have a student who purchased a Monette B6 mouthpiece prior to taking lessons with me. He struggles playing in tune, his upper register is limited, and his endurance is lacking. When this stuff is going on, the mouthpiece is not going to help. I would venture a guess that he had these issues before the Monette was purchased, although he is not admitting to it.

Re: Mouthpiece Comparison

When I was a kid, all the kids recommended Benge trumpets because the bell was thinner than Strads "Here, rub your finger under the bell and look!" like it was some trick. The Strad guys pushed their frieinds into Strads because they were "cool," translate "more expensive," meaning "better." Back in the seventies, mouthpieces weren't even a discussion, unless you showed up with a Jet Tone and then you were labled a cheater. Now, next to my Yamaha Shew I have an old Vega Standard which cost me less than 100 dollars and I love it. Moral: don't listen to your friends, listen to you teacher and your sound.

And there are no cheater mpcs!

Re: Mouthpiece Comparison

Here is the bottom line....

You are a high school player, that means your peers are high school players. With the VERY rare exception, they have NO CLUE as to what you should be playing.

There are NO shortcuts to practice, this is for tone and range.

You have not described your playing...and it would not matter anyway.

We here on the internet CAN NOT help you!

Call the Monette shop and speak the the mouthpiece tech.

You say that you cannot try one first, well....you MUST play them to know, and hopefully in front of a mouthpiece tech or TRUMPET teacher.

Maybe if we knew where you are located someone could help you.

Sorry, but those are the facts.

Call Brian Scriver with GR mouthpieces also.

A new mouthpiece, no matter what the brand is probably not the answer.

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew. (pitch going down with each Andrew)
Here is a post from you:

"I've recently been looking for a new horn for my son who is a senior in high school.

I've been searching online for a while and this looked like a nice one to me, but I'm no expert.

So if you can take a look at it and tell me some good or bad things about it, that would be great!

Link can be found here: Jupiter 1602S Trumpet

Thanks!"

Who is the real Andrew?
