mouthpiece for D/Eb trumpet

Hi!
I've been learning to play my new Schilke D/Eb trumpet, and I've heard different opinions about mouthpiece choice. Currently I'm using a Bach 7c with the new horn, which I think gives me a pleasingly bright sound, but I also seem to have trouble finding the tonal center of some notes. On my Bb horn (Bach Strad) I use a Schilke 20. I've heard some recommend I just use my Schilke 20 mp on the Eb trumpet; others suggest using something smaller, something more akin to what I use on my piccolo trumpet. I'm wondering what others out there are using on their D and/or Eb trumpets.

Thank you.

Re: mouthpiece for D/Eb trumpet

I've used a couple different mpcs for Eb. I use either my normal Bb mpc, a Monette B2S3 Prana, or a Monette E4 standard. For something that hangs in the upper register all the time, I've used my pic mpc, a Laskey 40*. They sound pretty similar, but make the horn feel a little bigger or smaller. Probably, the difference is mostly in my head, but I use whatever feels good for the music I'm playing.

Re: mouthpiece for D/Eb trumpet

Finding the "tonal center" of a horn is not necessarily the mouthpieces job. When you switch from a Bb to a higher pitched instrument, your brain is not accustomed to the intervals, you hear yourself differently.

The Schilke D/Eb is a pretty big horn. The 7C could very well not be the best match. I would give your Schilke 20 a go - for at least 6 months to a year.
