Mouthpiece Switch Help

I currently have been playing on a Bach 5C megatone mouthpiece for a year and a half. I am starting to despise the sound that I make on this mouthpiece and have been contemplating on switching. I have been interested in the Parke Merkelo Backbores and Kanstul Cup combination as this has been recommended by a friend. What Mouthpiece cup size should I switch to if I should switch at all? I'm looking for a rich sound mainly.

Thanks!

Nobody is going to tell you what mp to play,
simply because nobody can. You have to try
out the one thatīs the best for you.

You can ,however, compare various mpīs with this:

Kanstul Mouthpiece Comparator

Your in such a dilemma over this that you have to post this same question on here and on Trumpet Herald? Wow!!

You gotta sometime try a few different ones till ya find the one for you. Most of us have and had multiple mouthpieces in our day.

Re: Mouthpiece Switch Help

Welcome to TM, dqope21!

What don't you like about your sound? Too bright, too dark, too big, too small, too powerful, too wimpy....? Do you not like it all the time, or is it better in some rooms than others? What do the people on the other side of the bell think? Do you like the feel of the rim?

There are a whole bunch of parameters involved in the mouthpiece, and even knowing exactly what you are wanting it would be a long shot to predict the right one, but we might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Re: Mouthpiece Switch Help

Make sure you've recorded yourself a few times, too, before making any conclusions. You might be surprised. Mouthpieces by and large won't make you a fundamentally better player. But a great teacher, a TON of hours practicing every day, and 1000s of hours of listening to recordings can help--do those things first, and maybe then a new mouthpiece is in order.

Re: Mouthpiece Switch Help

You have gotten some great advice for no more than you have told us. None of us can with certainty tell you what mp to play. We don't know you, the shape of your mouth, the size of your lips, or what problems with your embouchure you might have. Grizzle gave you the best advice find a good competant teacher and do what they tell you and talk with them about it. Hardware does not solve a software problem. At this point I am not sure you really know what your problems are.

Re: Mouthpiece Switch Help

I'm a competitive high school trumpet player who practices a good amount for my age (2 hours + a day). I don't like the sound the 5C megatone produces. It is very shallow. If I switched from my current 5C megatone to a Kanstul B5C cup and a Parke 24 Backbore, what differences will I notice? Will this be a positive UPgrade? I've made All State band many times and am doing numerous competitions in the future.

Shallow is the player, not the hardware. A 5C can be used in any symphonic setting. The megatone version will sound a bit more solid, but my experience is that they are harder to play.

With the mouthpiece that you describe, you and other people listening will notice a change for no more than a week. Then I am convinced that everything will go back to the way that YOU hear presently.

This does not mean that there are no differences in mouthpieces. It means that if you despise YOUR sound, no hardware can help.

My sound is fine on any standard mouthpiece and becomes "unique" with specialty mouthpieces.

Beauty is in your head, not on your face. The sooner you get that message, the sooner you will be able to clean up.

Start practicing tunes like out of the hymnbook. Make your horn speak. THAT is how we build beauty.
